BBC Proms 2022 Radio 3, 7pm
Massed voices – so missed during the pandemic – are a welcome feature of this year’s Proms. This sea-themed concert marks Ralph Vaughan Williams’s 150th-anniversary year by giving A Sea Symphony the deluxe treatment with two great symphonic choruses plus the operatic talents of soprano Elizabeth Llewellyn and bass-baritone Andrew Foster-williams. Conductor Andrew Manze leads the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales and BBC Symphony Chorus, and the concert opens with Welsh composer Grace Williams’s surging musical seascape Sea Sketches and Doreen Carwithen’s Bishop Rock.
The Folk Show with Mark Radcliffe Radio 2, 8pm
In eager anticipation of the Commonwealth Games, an extended edition celebrates roots music connecting to Australia, Canada, India, Pakistan, Jamaica and other Commonwealth nations. Also, Johnny Kalsi performs songs of the South Asian diaspora and Brummie Jon Wilks looks at the city’s long-enduring folk scene.
