French double standards on display at Dover

-

sir – To my mind there is no doubt that the border-control delays at Dover (report, July 26) are at the deliberate behest of the French authorities.

What makes them even more galling is that the French continue to allow illegal migrants to leave their country, while erecting barriers to hamper the journeys of those seeking to enter France legally.

Britain should cease its bordercontrol contributions until this arrant and insulting nonsense stops.

sir – The French deliberately causing delays at Dover and Calais? Nothing new. And one must not forget all those other French provocations.

These problems can be fixed by sending ferries to Zeebrugge or Ostend instead of Calais. Just cut France out.

Frankly, the bill for running the Operation Brock traffic system should be sent to the French, because they are nearly always responsible for delays at Dover (the rest of the time the cause is bad weather).

sir – The port facilities at Ramsgate have been sitting idle for many years, but the infrastructure, in terms of road and rail access, is still there. Apart from easing the heavy loads elsewhere, reopening Ramsgate would bring in much-needed jobs for the Thanet area and revenue for the council.
