Edinburgh University’s folly over David Hume
SIR – The ill-judged renaming of Edinburgh University’s David Hume Tower because of a “racist” comment that the philosopher made some 250 years ago (report, July 20) is proving to be a colossal own goal.
The £2 million lost, after donations were cancelled in protest, could have improved the prospects of countless students from less affluent backgrounds. How many more donors will be put off by the sanctimonious posturing of the university authorities?
Perhaps it is time the university’s controversial vice chancellor reflected on the folly of his virtuesignalling stance and considered making up some of the shortfall from his generous remuneration package. Go woke, go broke. John Rees

SIR – David Hume was a leading figure in the Scottish Enlightenment, even if he did hold the odd view that we would not accept today.
The withdrawal of donations and legacies in response to Edinburgh University’s decision is a good lesson for the students that all actions have consequences.
