Police smartened up
SIR – Well done to Chief Constable Stephen Watson (report, July 27), who is turning around Greater Manchester Police. Like the often cited example of William Bratton in New York, Mr Watson is clearly cutting through the all too prevalent belief that policing should be an unduly complex business.
Policing has undoubted difficulties, but the basics of a smart and wellmotivated workforce, effective and supportive management and positive police work (ie arresting people) are, once again, paying off.
