First monkeypox death confirmed in Europe
Spain reported its first monkeypoxrelated death yesterday, the second outside of Africa in the outbreak.
Earlier yesterday, Brazil reported the first death outside of Africa.
The Spanish health ministry said there had been 4,298 confirmed cases in the country. Of the 3,750 patients it had information on, 120 have been treated in hospital, accounting for about 3.2 per cent.
The outbreak was first reported by the World Health Organisation in May. Last weekend, the global health organisation declared monkeypox a “public health emergency of international concern”, raising the outbreak to its highest threat level.
