Ukraine war’s end

SIR – General Lord Dannatt (Comment, July 30), discussing Ukraine, writes: “With the obvious exception of the Second World War, most modern conflicts have ended in negotiatio­n not outright victory on the battlefiel­d.”

Some exceptions: Suez, Vietnam, Afghanista­n (Russia) Afghanista­n (Us-led coalition), the Falklands – all ended in a military victory for one side, and no negotiated settlement.
