SIR – We now live in a complex and over-regulated nation and people’s expectatio­ns have been made so high that it is impossible for a government to deliver fully at any level.

Yet false promises continue unabated, currently by the reckless Conservati­ve Party leadership candidates. The result of this culture is permanent dissatisfa­ction and the further annihilati­on of self-reliance. Guy de la Bédoyère
