Trump backs ‘Eric’ and sows confusion in Missouri election

- By Jamie Johnson in Washington

DONALD TRUMP has baffled Republicans by endorsing “Eric” for the hotly contested Missouri senate race, thus avoiding having to choose between two candidates with the same first name.

Mr Trump’s statement, on the eve of the primary, suggested he was hedging his bets between Eric Greitens, a former state governor, and Eric Schmitt, the state attorney general.#

It has since emerged that he had phoned both men, assuring them they had his support, and that they each released statements expressing their gratitude for his endorsement.

“We need a person who will not back down to the radical Left lunatics who are destroying our country,” Mr Trump’s statement read.

“I trust the great people of Missouri, on this one, to make up their own minds, much as they did when they gave me landslide victories in the 2016 and 2020 Elections, and I am therefore proud to announce that Eric has my complete and total endorsement!”

Mr Greitens and Mr Schmitt each claimed the endorsement in tweets sent minutes apart.
