Elusive GPS

-

SIR – I have just seen a television advertisement aiming to reduce cancer. It stated: “The NHS wants to see you. Contact your GP now.”

Do they not realise that this is almost impossible?

SIR – Having negotiated my way through many hospital appointments for my wife in the past three years, I suggest that, before any move to fine patients for failing to attend (Letters, August 1), the system is overhauled.

It is only possible to cancel an appointment if you can get through on the phone. Calls are mostly not answered. It is routine to have to hang on for more than half an hour to book or cancel patient transport. Letters are sent out at short notice: last week my wife received one dated July 1 but not posted until July 29.

Addressing this problem would be the best way to support clinical staff. Peter Knowles
