Mountain Rescue asks tourists for help as callouts increase

- By India Mctaggart

RESCUE teams are relying on holidaymakers to help unprepared walkers as the number of calls has increased in the past few years.

Mountain Rescue England and Wales said that the number of callouts the 49 teams across the country receive is “increasing year on year” and “will continue to” rise unless people prepare properly for hikes. Mike Park, senior executive officer, warned of the “ongoing trend of people not prepared to learn just some of the basic skills to keep themselves safe out on the hill”. Volunteer teams are having to ask recruits that are only visiting on holiday to be on standby as a result to staff shortages.

“We’re asking people who were coming for a holiday to spend their time rescuing other people who have come for a holiday,” Mr Park said.
