SIR – Annette Scott’s father’s choice of Fairy liquid for hairwashing (Letters, September 2) reminded me of Sunlight soap, which worked beautifully with the soft Loch Katrine water of my Glasgow childhood. A move to London and hard water ended that economy. Sheila Stevens

SIR – My grandfather’s sight deteriorated in his later years and, on one occasion, he used Windolene to wash his hair. The lack of any lather puzzled him.
We had to start supervising him much more closely after he tried to use Deep Heat on his toothbrush.
