The World Bridge Federation has announced special exemptions to the age qualificat­ions for the 2023 Youth World Championsh­ips, writes Julian Pottage, Bridge Correspond­ent. This is in recognitio­n of the difficulty created by the pandemic over the past couple of years.

For the under 16 event, all players must have been born in 2007 or later and all but two must have been born in 2008 or later.

For the under 21 event, all players must have been born in 2002 or later and all but two must have been born in 2003 or later.

For the under 26 events (Open and Women), all players must have been born in 1997 or later and all buttwo must have been born in 1998 or later.

For the under 31 event, all players must have been born in 1992 or later and all but two must have been born in 1993 or later.

The WBF communique stresses that the option to have one or two players in a team who are a year over the normal age limit is an exception for 2023 only and that normal age limits will return in 2024.
