Gunner killed herself after watchlist removal

A British Army gunner killed herself after being removed from a mental health watchlist, an inquest has heard.

Sophie Madden, 23, a mother-of-one from Wigan, Lancs, was found dead at St Martin’s Plain Training Centre in Folkestone, Kent on June 10.

Ms Madden was in the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery and had been out with colleagues. She was seen heading towards the shower block at 1am and found dead there around 9.30am.

Ms Madden had been placed on a “vulnerability register” by the Army in 2020 after she was seen hitting her head against a wall after alcohol.

Katrina Hepburn returned a verdict of suicide, at Maidstone yesterday.
