Arena: James Joyce’s Ulysses
BBC Two, 9pm; not NI
A formidable array of fans, from Salman Rushdie and Colm Toíbin to Anne Enright and Howard Jacobson, dust off their battered copies of James Joyce’s long, impenetrable masterpiece to pay tribute to its mysterious majesty, a plot both simple and impossible to summarise and densely packed with boundlessly rewarding themes. Arena veteran Adam Low’s film is a delicate balance: wholly welcoming to newcomers, indulgent of existing fans and pugnacious with critics.
