Boys who changed age to fight on the beaches

-

SIR – I read with interest your obituary (August 22) of Fred Lee, who is believed to have been one of the youngest naval ratings to participate in the D-day landings.

Fred was born on July 30 1926. My late father, Jack Robertson, was born a month later on August 26 1926, and, like many others of his generation, changed his birth date by one year to enlist in the Navy. He arrived on Sword Beach in a landing craft on June 6 1944, like Fred a mere 17 years old. He always joked that by putting up his age he would receive his naval pension one year earlier.
