Marquinhos off to a flying start
Arsenal began their Europa League campaign with a victory in St Gallen last night, as 19-year-old new signing Marquinhos starred on his debut by scoring one and delivering the assist for Eddie Nketiah’s winner.
Manager Mikel Arteta wanted to provide valuable match time for emerging players and Marquinhos put Arsenal into the lead from Nketiah’s cut-back before Mirlind Kryeziu equalised from the penalty spot after Nketiah had fouled Fidan Aliti.
News of the Queen’s death was announced just as the first half ended and, after the players observed a minute’s silence at the start of the second half, Marquinhos and Nketiah again combined to seal Arsenal’s victory, the striker heading in at the far post.
