When the Queen Spoke to the Nation

-

BBC One, 9pm

The Queen’s speeches have narrated our lives for seven decades. She never gave interviews, but this was a chance for the nation to hear her thoughts firsthand. “The Queen was so conscious that every word mattered,” says Sally Osman, former director of royal communcations, in this documentary, narrated by Kirsty Young, that examines the monarch’s long history with public speaking. David Attenborough, who guided the Queen through her Christmas broadcast when he was a producer in 1990, is among those movingly sharing their memories, alongside Alastair Campbell, John Major, Rowan Williams and many others.
