Harrods and Aldi among shops closing for the Queen’s funeral

- By India Mctaggart

SHOPS across Britain have announced they will close on Monday Sept 19 in a show of respect for the Queen’s funeral.

Supermarket giants including Sainsbury’s and Waitrose, as well as department stores John Lewis and Harrods, confirmed the closure plans yesterday.

Aldi, Primark and WH Smith will also shut their doors to the public on Sept 19, which has been confirmed as a bank holiday. Retailers are not required to close on the day of the funeral but many have chosen to do so as a mark of respect, while others may choose to open for reduced hours, as many do on bank holidays. Sainsbury’s said it will keep its convenience shops and petrol filling stations open on Sept 19 to allow customers to pick up “essential items”.

Meanwhile, Morrisons has lowered the volume of its checkout beeps. The supermarket has turned off the radio in its stores out of respect for the Queen. It said the beeps were deemed unnecessarily loud now that the radio is not playing in the background.
