US mayor’s first-class flights ‘a matter of safety’
A US mayor is refusing to pay back $29,000 (£24,000) for first-class flights, claiming the upgrades were “a matter of safety” for her as a black woman.
Latoya Cantrell, mayor of New Orleans, has spent more than $38,200 on business and first-class flights for work travel since January last year, according to the city’s records. It includes travel to Paris, where Ms Cantrell and her staff chose to stay at a hotel that averaged $726 per night.
New Orleans city council has sought a legal review over the issue.
