World to have its hottest summer ever by 2026

The world will almost definitely experience its hottest year on record in the next few years, leading meteorologists have warned.

There is a 93 per cent likelihood there will be a new warmest year on record by 2026, according to a United Nations report. An El Niño-enhanced 2016 is the current hottest year on record, with 2020 and 2019 second and third, respectively.

Data is not yet available for 2022. UN Secretary-general António Guterres said extreme weather is getting worse.
