Creator of ‘fatal’ vegan yogurt blames suppliers

The creator of a “dairy-free” yogurt used in a Pret a Manger vegan wrap told an inquest of her regret at trusting other firms in the production process.

Bethany Eaton, the managing director of Planet Coconut, cried as she gave evidence at the inquest of Celia Marsh, 42, who died in 2017 from an allergic reaction to dairy in a wrap.

The court heard the Planet Coconut yogurt used in the wrap contained “HG1” starch, supplied by Tate & Lyle, which was identified as the possible source of the contamination.

Mrs Eaton said: “I didn’t ever dream [my product] would contain dairy.” She claims she was told that the starch was made in an allergen-free environment.
