Trump: charging me would tear US apart

- By Nick Allen in Washington

DONALD TRUMP has said that the United States would be “torn apart” if he is charged with a crime over the discovery of top-secret documents at his Mar-a-lago estate in Florida.

The former president also said that, if he is charged, it would not stop him running for the White House again in 2024.

Asked if he believed the Department of Justice was trying to charge him, and whether he would run for president anyway, Mr Trump told radio host Hugh Hewitt: “Well, I can’t imagine being indicted. I’ve done nothing wrong.

“I don’t think the people of the United States would stand for it. And as you know, if a thing like that happened, I would have no prohibition against running.”

He added: “But I think if it happened, I think you’d have problems in this country the likes of which perhaps we’ve never seen before.

“That’s not inciting. I’m just saying what my opinion is. If they ever did anything on indictment I just think it would tear this country apart.”

On Aug 8 the FBI seized government records from Mar-a-lago, more than 100 of which were classified.

Several documents marked “top secret” were found in Mr Trump’s office.
