Russia in defeat
sir – I was interested and alarmed to read Ben Hodges’ article (Comment, September 14) about the possibility and consequences of a break-up of the Russian Federation.
I fervently hope that Russia suffers a complete and humiliating defeat in Ukraine, resulting in the removal of Vladimir Putin from office.
However, Lt-gen Hodges is clearly right to worry about the security of Russia’s nuclear arsenal in such an event. Any scaling down of Western economic sanctions against Russia should occur only in return for a massive decommissioning of Russian nuclear weaponry.
This would prevent any successor to Putin from threatening the world with nuclear war, and also greatly reduce the chances of Russia’s arsenal falling into the hands of dissident states or indeed terrorists.
