A final note Loving message signed ‘Charles R’
The King left a final handwritten message for his mother on a card above the funeral wreath which read: “In loving and devoted memory.”
The note also included his new signature, “Charles R”, in use since he was formally proclaimed king at the Accession Council ceremony on Sept 11.
The King’s note echoed his tribute to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother 20 years ago, when he used the same text on a stone memorial in a garden he designed after his grandmother’s death.
As the coffin was processed down the nave, a spider crawled onto the card. It remained there for several seconds before returning from whence it came – the flowers and foliage picked from royal gardens, a small reminder that even on this most planned of days, surprises could still emerge.
