Labour conference to feature republican event
A republican fringe event at this year’s Labour Party conference will go ahead despite the death of Queen Elizabeth II, organisers have said.
Labour for a Republic has faced calls to cancel its “what future for the monarchy” panel event, but organisers said its timing was “particularly apt given the unchallenged transfer of power from one unelected head of state to another” and it will go ahead.
It comes after Sir Keir Starmer decided to break with tradition and play the national anthem at this year’s party conference.
A Labour spokesman said: “The Labour Party is not responsible for the content of fringe meetings.”
