The Producers (1968) BBC Four, 9pm
Mel Brooks’s irrepressible comedy is built from a 24-carat conceit: a seedy producer (Zero Mostel) and his new accountant (Gene Wilder) decide to stage a Broadway flop because, legally, they could keep the money put up by investors. Instead, their awful play, Springtime for Hitler, brings down the house – as did the theatrical version of The Producers on Broadway in 2001. Brooks’s Blazing Saddles follows.
