Doncaster football club kicks off bid to play in Scottish Cup

- By Daniel Sanderson

A SOUTH YORKSHIRE football club has launched a bold attempt to enter the Scottish Cup, by claiming an ancient treaty means it is based in Scotland.

Doncaster City said it had applied to enter next year’s competition, citing an agreement signed in 1134 by King Stephen, an English monarch, which ceded Doncaster to King David I, ruler of Scotland, at the time. Historians say it was never formally revoked.

The club said that two other English sides – Berwick Rangers and Tweedmouth Rangers – were permitted to play in Scottish competitions. Doncaster is around 170 miles south of the Scottish border.

However, Scottish Football Association sources say Doncaster will not be allowed to enter the tournament.
