Bruce Willis brought out of retirement with ‘digital twin’

- By Nick Allen

BRUCE WILLIS has become the first Hollywood star to sell his rights to allow a “digital twin” of himself to be created for use on screen.

The 67-year-old appeared in a phone advert without ever being on set after his face was digitally transplanted on to that of another actor using deepfake technology.

“I liked the precision with which my character turned out. It’s a mini-movie in my usual action-comedy genre,” Willis said in a statement on the website of US firm Deepcake, which hosts a library of Ai-replicas of celebrities.

“For me, it is a great opportunity to go back in time,” he added.

“With the advent of modern technology, even when I was on another continent, I was able to communicate, work and participate in the filming.

“It’s a very new and interesting experience, and I thank our entire team.”

While there have been warnings that deepfake technology could be used to spread political disinformation, in Hollywood it opens up the possibility that actors could star in films after they die. It also means, ultimately, stars from past eras could be brought back to life on screen.

The technology has already been used in Star Wars spin-offs to recreate the younger selves of actors. Earlier this year, it was announced that Willis was “stepping away” from acting after he was diagnosed with aphasia, a condition which causes difficulties with language or speech.

According to the NHS, people with aphasia often have trouble with reading, listening, speaking or writing.

A statement from the Willis family earlier this year, said: “We wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities ... as a result of this, and with much consideration, Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.

“This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support.”
