Lax security fails to spot rotten meat entering UK
Rotting food and horse meat is entering the UK because of sparse bio-security checks. Natalie Elphicke, the Dover MP, said maggot-infested and rotten meat unfit for human consumption and flax seeds with “dangerous” levels of pesticides were among goods found by port officials in spot checks.
In the Summer the then Brexit opportunities minister Jacob Reesmogg chose to mothball plans for a new bio-security health facility at Dover with extra staff to carry out border checks on incoming goods.
Port health authorities said the decision would be an act of negligence towards animal and human health.
