Labour tables vote to see advice on Braverman post
LABOUR will today attempt to force the publication of secret advice given to Rishi Sunak before he reappointed Suella Braverman.
Sir Keir Starmer has tabled a binding Commons vote on releasing the documents in a bid to pile more pressure on the Home Secretary.
The move is also an attempt to create further division within the Tories and put the Prime Minister on a collision course with his MPS. He will have to either allow backbenchers to abstain, meaning the motion is likely to pass, or order them to oppose it, risking a rebellion. Labour is using one of its Opposition Day debates, meaning it is in charge of the Commons order paper, to drive through the vote.
Mrs Braverman was forced to resign last month when it emerged she had sent official documents from a private email address.
She forwarded a Written Ministerial Statement on migration policy to the Tory MP Sir John Hayes, a close ally of hers. But in doing so she copied in the assistant of another backbencher, Andrew Percy, who then reported the breach. Liz Truss ordered her to resign after being told her actions constituted a breach of the ministerial code. Mrs Braverman was then reinstated by Mr Sunak after only a week out of the job.
