Boundary change puts Raab at risk of defeat by Lib Dems

- Political correspondent By Nick Gutteridge

DOMINIC RAAB is under threat from a proposed shake-up of constituency boundaries that would lead to him being stripped of Tory voting areas.

The Deputy Prime Minister is sitting on a wafer-thin majority of 2,743 and faces an uphill battle to hold off the Liberal Democrats.

Under the Boundary Commission plans, the seats of Cabinet ministers Ben Wallace and Sir Gavin Williamson would effectively be abolished.

Officials at the politically neutral body are redrawing the political map of England to bring it up to date with recent population changes.

The review will even out the number of people in each constituency and increase the total number of MPS in England from 533 to 543. But it could have implications for the future prospects of some of Westminster’s biggest names at the next general election.

Esher and Walton, the Surrey seat of Mr Raab, is being redrawn to remove one of the heaviest voting Tory wards.

He argued against the move, but his pleas were rejected, leaving the Liberal Democrats in an even stronger position.

“We are confident we can take the fight to the Conservatives there whatever the boundaries,” a spokesman said.
