Churchill’s suit could keep us warm this winter
SIR – As one who remembers the Blitz, as well as the doodlebug V1 flying bombs towards the end of the Second World War, I was aware of the benefits of the “siren suit”, which was popularised by Winston Churchill. This was a one-piece garment with some insulation, which you could slip into when the air-raid warning sounded at night and you were snug in bed. The cellar of the house or the nearest underground bombshelter was cool and uninviting after the comfort of a warm blanket.
As we face rising energy bills, could now be the time to revisit the “siren suit”, with our modern knowledge of insulation materials? Fashion designers could espouse the idea of warmth with style, or even some panache.
