Love them or hate them, Christmas Twiglets may vanish

- By Berny Torre

A RANGE of Christmas snacks are under threat after hundreds of factory workers began a “permanent strike” yesterday.

Twiglets, Jaffa Cake bars, Mini Cheddar nibbles and Club bars could disappear from supermarket shelves during the walkout at Jacob’s Aintree plant, the GMB union said.

Production of Jacob’s Cream Crackers will move abroad for the first time since the factory opened in 1914 to avert a Christmas shortage during the strike, according to an internal memo shared with The Daily Telegraph.

Eamon O’hearn, GMB national officer, said: “Bosses are shifting an iconic British brand to Portugal to undermine their own staff.

“These workers will now have their jobs put at risk by a company that would rather move its production abroad than pay them a wage they can live on.”

More than 750 workers at the plant have been taking “limited” industrial action since early September “in pursuit of a pay award that meets their claim for cost of living”.

A GMB spokesman said: “This is now almost everyone in the factory on strike until further notice.”

Jacob’s has not responded to requests for comment.
