SULTAN’S FLIGHT FROM CONSTANTINOPLE.
Last night we received the following stately sent from the War Office:
“It was officially announced in Constantinople to-day (Friday) that his Imperial Majesty the Sultan, fearing his liberty and life to be in danger owing to the present situation, asked, as Khalif of all the Mussulmans, for British protection and transportation forthwith from Constantinople. His Imperial Majesty’s wishes were complied with.
“This morning Lieut.-general Sir Charles Harington, K.C.B.. D.S.O., Commander-in-chief of the British forces in Turkey, waited for his Imperial Majesty, and accompanied him to a British warship, on which he was received by Admiral Sir Osmond de B. Brock, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., Commander-in-chief, Mediterranean Fleet. Mr. Nevile Henderson, Acting British High Commissioner, visited his Imperial Majesty on board ship, in order to ascertain his wishes for conveyance to his Majesty King George V.
“The Sultan left on board the warship Malaya for Malta.”
