GOVERNMENT MAJORITY – 79.
Three more General Election results were declared on Saturday – the London and Welsh Universities and Inverness – and only the figures for Orkney and Shetland now remain to come in.
As was anticipated, Sir Sidney Russell-wells easily retained the London University seat for the Government, securing more votes than those of his Independent Liberal and Labour opponents combined. Indeed, Mr. H. G. Wells, the Labour nominee, polled 2,406 fewer than the victor. The National Liberals held the Inverness and University of Wales seats against attack from an Independent Liberal in the former case and both Independent Liberal and Labour in the latter.
Thus, with the result of one fight – in which the contestants are National and Independent Liberals – to be disclosed, the parties stand: Conservatives 347, Labour 139, National Liberals 59, Independent Liberals 52, Independent 5, Co-operative 4, Liberals 3, Nationalists 2, Prohibition 1, Communist 1, Sinn Fein 1
CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY 79
Assuming that Orkney and Shetland maintains its National Liberal allegiance, the gains and losses works out as follows: Conservative Gains 41, Losses 64: Net Losses 23 Labour Gains, 78 Losses 17: Net Gains 61 Ind. Liberal Gains 38, Losses 9: Net Gains 29 Nat. Liberal Gains 6, Losses 79: Net Losses 73
