Labour and migrants

-

SIR – Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, has said that we must end our dependence on migrant labour (report, November 22), but makes no mention of what he plans to do about the thousands of illegal immigrants coming into the country, the millions of pounds it is costing us in hotel bills, and the issues being caused by large numbers being bussed into towns around the country, with little or no warning.

He also tells us that we must embrace automation and robotics. With a rising population, boosted by immigration, this must mean that the proportion of those working will be lower. Inevitably, the cost of support will fall on fewer people, leading to an increasing tax burden.

There may be a feeling that a Labour government could not be worse than this Tory one, but without more clarity on Labour policies, it is a risky assumption. Dealing with our current problems will take courage, conviction, and the risk of being unpopular, not just statements designed to appeal to the electorate. Jonathan Mann
