New scans could end air travel limits on liquids

-

Air passengers could soon be allowed to fly with liquids in volumes greater than 100ml thanks to new 3D scanners which are being tested at Heathrow, Gatwick and Birmingham airports.

The CT scan technology also means the need to remove laptops, tablets and cameras from hand luggage while going through security could be axed within the next two years. Ministers are reviewing the technology and an announcement is due before Christmas, according to The Times.

The rules limiting passengers to 100ml bottles of liquid have been in place for 16 years since a failed al-qaeda plot to smuggle explosives disguised as drinks on to planes.
