Biden calls for gun controls after latest mass shooting

- By Nick Allen in Washington

JOE BIDEN last night called for renewed action on gun control after America’s latest mass shooting left at least six dead at a Walmart store in Virginia.

A manager at the store opened fire on employees in a break room before they started their shifts on Tuesday night.

It came as America was preparing to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday today. The US president said: “We must come together as a nation. We must take greater action.”

The shooting happened in Chesapeake, a city of 250,000 people, 150 miles south-east of Washington. The gunman was later identified as Andre Bing, 31. Walmart said he had been with the company since 2010.

Briana Tyler, an employee who survived, said: “I looked up and my manager just opened the door and opened fire. He didn’t say a word. He just came around the corner and started shooting.”

The gunman laughed during the attack, a survivor said. Jessie Wilczewski told local TV he appeared to target other managers. He saw her hiding under a table, and told her to “go home”.

Six people died and the gunman fatally shot himself. Four other people were injured and remain in hospital.

In Colorado last weekend, five people were shot dead at a gay nightclub. According to the Gun Violence Archive there have been more than 600 mass shootings, in which at least four people are killed or injured, in the US this year.

Glenn Youngkin, the governor of Virginia, said: “Heinous acts of violence have no place in our communities.”
