Mr. Bonar Law spoke very guardedly about Ireland, but emphasised the general determinat­ion of the British people to give the Treaty a fair trial. He justified his refusal to receive the unemployed deputation on the ground that if he had any statement of policy to make the House of Commons was the place in which to make it, and he pleaded that he was anxious to get rid of the pernicious idea that a Prime Minister is a sort of master over other Ministers, and can take the conduct of their Department­al duties out of their hands. “I think I was right,” he said, “and I intend to adhere to it.”
