We should still be proud of the Royal family, says Sunak

- By Dominic Penna

THE Prime Minister has said he remains “proud” of the Royal family in the wake of revelations from the Duke of Sussex’s forthcoming memoirs.

Leaked extracts from Prince Harry’s book Spare, to be published tomorrow, include claims that Prince William physically attacked him.

Asked if the public can still have faith in the royals, Rishi Sunak told the BBC’S Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg: “I think the public, like me, have enormous regard for the Royal family; they’re deeply proud of them. I certainly am.

“It’s one of the things I’m most proud of when I think about what it is to be British. When I get to go around the world and champion Britain as an amazing country with so many things that we can be proud of, our institutions, including the Royal family, are one of those.”

When pressed on whether the Duke’s allegations had damaged the image of the monarchy, Mr Sunak said he did not generally discuss the Royal family “but it’s something that I’m proud of and I think the country is proud of ”.

He said: “We saw that last year very movingly multiple times and I’m confident we’ll see it this year with King Charles’s coronation.”

The Prime Minister has declined to comment on the specifics of the current row involving Prince Harry’s book, and his spokesman would not be drawn on the issue last week, as a series of dramatic excerpts appeared in newspapers.

Last month, Downing Street said that Mr Sunak did not back a proposal to strip the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of their titles following the release of their Netflix documentary series.
