Met Office warns of power cuts and floods
POWER cuts and floods could be on the way, the Met Office has warned.
Heavy rain is expected across most of the country tomorrow, with a yellow warning for severe weather issued in parts of north-west England and Wales.
The forecasters say that there could be disruption to public transport and drivers and flooding “of a few homes and businesses is likely”.
The yellow warning adds that “interruption to power supplies and other services is possible”.
The warning is in place from 6am to 8pm and stretches from the Lake District to Derby as well as Manchester and Liverpool. A second identical warning covers most of Wales.
The Met Office has also forecast “heavy showers and strong winds on Wednesday” followed by “further rain and strong winds”, which will spread north-east on Thursday.
The government agency’s tips for staying safe in heavy rain include charging your mobile phone, checking the latest local flood advice and parking your car outside of a flood zone.
It also advises those at risk of flooding to “store valuables up high, including electrical devices, important documents and furniture”. The warning comes after a wet weekend for many, with 30 flood warnings in place last night from the Environment Agency, mainly in the South West.
The agency said: “Local river and surface water flooding is probable on Tuesday across north-west England and parts of the West Midlands and possible more widely across northern England.
“Flooding from the River Severn is probable in Shropshire and Worcestershire through to at least Thursday. Further local river and surface water flooding impacts are possible on Thursday across the North of England and southwest England. Land, roads and some properties may flood and there may be travel disruption.”
The Met office said that the unsettled weather is likely to continue for the next fortnight, “with showers or longer spells of rain for all areas at times”.
