Tube drivers join Elizabeth line staff in walkout threat
Tube drivers have joined Elizabeth line staff in threatening to bring London to a standstill as unions challenge Sadiq Khan over changes to pensions.
Drivers union Aslef is poised to notify Transport for London, the authority chaired by the capital’s Mayor, of planned industrial action.
An independent review conducted on behalf of Mr Khan in 2021 concluded that Tube drivers enjoyed “generous” retirement benefits.
Around £100m could be saved by 2025 by restructuring pension plans, experts concluded. Mr Khan vowed to secure the cuts to pensions in return for a bailout from the Government in March 2022. The cash injection was one of a series paid for by taxpayers to avoid TFL collapsing into bankruptcy.
