Canned on the go

-

Waitrose is to sell wine in little cans instead of bottles. It’s a great way to enjoy wine, the supermarket says, if you are heading to a social occasion. What, then, is the etiquette? Do you sip your third of a pint of malbec while the others stand about with their own can? Or is it to drink on the way to the event (probably not at the wheel, even if it doesn’t put you over the limit)? Waitrose cites the popularity of “cocktails on the go” though anyone absentmindedly drinking a canned mojito on the London Overground will find plenty of people pointing out there’s a law against it. For a long journey, another Waitrose product might serve better. A 2.5 litre box of the oddly named “Chilean Red Soft and Juicy” (12.5 per cent alcohol) at £14.95 could last all the family from London to Aberdeen, at least on a non-strike day.
