Driving damp

- Edington, Somerset

sir – In 1953, I took my driving test in my father’s elderly Daimler (Letters, January 10), which had a sliding roof that leaked in wet weather. It started to rain heavily and drips fell on to the examiner’s paperwork. I offered him a waterproof rug but he declined and directed me back to the test centre.

Shocked by our early return, my father wondered what driving crime I had committed. I passed.

Richard Clark sir – Aged 17, I took my driving test in a Morris Minor. Approaching a roundabout, we saw a group of riders on horses and ponies coming in the opposite direction. Though I could have crossed, the examiner and I sat in stony silence for about five minutes while I let them all pass. It satisfactorily shortened the time for the rest of the test, which I passed. No comment was made about the delay.
