Seville oranges – but not as we know them

-

sir – What has become of the gnarly-skinned, thick-pithed, pip-packed Seville oranges of former years?

The two kilos I have just turned into this year’s supply of marmalade had smooth skins, very little pith and a distinct paucity of pips. The familiar flavour is there but the appearance and texture of the chunky shreds are far from what they should be. Why?
