Teacher strikes
SIR – As a former primary school head, I totally condemn the proposed teacher strike action (report, January 17). Teachers benefit from: working in a safe, secure environment; a hugely beneficial pension, with almost 24 per cent paid in by the employer; a 200-day working year, and excellent sickness cover – six months on full pay and six on half pay. There is also good career progression to high salaries if in an academy trust organisation.
Children have already lost so much through lockdowns – which teachers demanded. This action is selfish and shows a blatant disregard for the children in the teachers’ care. Those about to strike should hang their heads in shame, or find an alternative career.

SIR – I am ashamed of my profession. Where is the union Voice, which used to be the Professional Association of Teachers? We had a do-not-strike clause. I was in the profession for 50 years and never joined a strike.
I volunteer now, but will go in if required on strike days.
