Christmas trees a gift for dunes
Vital coastal sand dunes have been saved from erosion by recycled Christmas trees. Volunteers with Cornish-based environmental group Beach Guardian have been using donated trees in Constantine Bay, Padstow, to prevent flooding and coastal erosion. The trees are planted in the sand to act as a natural barrier preventing the dune from falling apart, and encouraging the growth of new fauna – strengthening the dunes. Beach Guardian said it received more than 250 Christmas trees, which were buried in a trench – alongside 300 trees donated last year. Emily Stevenson, group co-founder, said: “The Christmas tree project is one of my favourite events each year because there is always such a buzz. We have people of all ages getting stuck in. This project really gives a positive and lasting legacy to Christmas celebrations.”
