Broke council blew £176k on pop-up eatery
A cash-strapped council lost £176,000 in just four weeks on an experimental seaside restaurant.
The high-end pop-up opened on Bournemouth beach in Dorset last August, but was ridiculed by customers for its poor service and closed after a month of trading, making a total loss of £176,000.
It comes as the local authority has more than doubled the rent for beach hut tenants to help save it from bankruptcy.
A council spokesman said the restaurant was a “test” of a way to improve the seafront, adding that it was one of many pop-up and permanent eateries in the area.
