Families cut back on takeaway deliveries as prices rise steeply

- By Matthew Field

FAMILIES have cut back on the number of takeaways they are ordering as the price of a takeaway climbs.

Food delivery company Deliveroo reported its orders had fallen by 2pc in the three months ending in December.

At the same time, the value of Deliveroo’s sales increased as the price of a meal went up. Its “gross transaction value per order”, or the average cost of a takeaway, increased by 11pc, the company said, to £23.90. Its gross sales increased to £1.79bn over the festive period, up from £1.65bn the previous year. The value of orders in its UK division topped £1bn for the first time.

Deliveroo, which listed on the London Stock Exchange in a disastrous float in 2021, said it had broken even in the second half of 2022 and that it expected to make a profit in its next financial year.

On Wednesday, Just Eat Takeaway reported a sharper decline in orders, but said the increasing cost of a takeaway meant revenues had not fallen as far. Just Eat said orders fell by 12pc in the three months ending in December, but transaction values only fell by 2pc.
