LONDON’S biggest borough is the latest council to block attempts to install cameras used to police the expansion of the Ulez charge in London.

Jason Perry, the mayor of Tory-led Croydon council, said it would resist attempts by Transport for London to use lamp posts and street furniture for Ulez signage.

It was also disclosed that Croydon could join a group of four outer London boroughs that are looking into options to take legal action challenging the Mayor of London’s decision.

Last week, Sutton council said it would defy Sadiq Khan and refuse to install cameras. Then, it was disclosed that Bexley, Bromley, Hillingdon and Harrow had joined forces to look at a legal challenge to the plan.

The Daily Telegraph understands that Harrow and Bexley are also aiming to block the installation of cameras by TFL.

The changes will expand the Ulez charge to cover all 32 London boroughs. It will mean drivers must pay a £12.50 charge if their vehicle doesn’t meet European emissions standards.

Mr Khan has faced scrutiny from Conservative London Assembly members over claims that he interfered with the consultation process by excluding thousands of votes opposing the expansion.

A TFL spokesman said: “The Mayor has been clear that with 4000 Londoners a year dying from toxic air, his decision to expand the ULEZ should be implemented with minimal delay.”

A spokesman for Mr Khan said the expansion was “necessary to reduce toxic air pollution, tackle the climate emergency and cut congestion in our city”.
